Annual Awards Criteria
Technician of the Year

Eligibility
?
The nominee
must be responsible for animals within his or her job function.
?
The
nominee’s position must not exceed that of a unit supervisor.
?
If no
nominee sufficiently qualified by the judges, no award will be given.
Nomination Packet
?
Nominations
must be sent to the Awards Committee Chair by December 15th
of each year.
?
The packet
must consist of 2 parts:

The
nomination document, which addresses how the nominee fits the criteria
listed above. This document must not exceed two pages, double-spaced.
·
Letters of
endorsement, a maximum of three letters limited to 1 page each.
·
Proof of
AALAS certification.
Distinguished Service
Award (Plaque)
Intent- This is a career
award to recognize those who have dedicated many years to laboratory
animal science.
Eligibility
?
Nominees
should have at least 15 years of significant, consistent dedication to,
and focus on laboratory animal science and the AALAS organization.
?
If no
nominee is deemed sufficiently qualified by the judges, no award will be
given.
Criteria
?
Distinguished and lengthy career in laboratory animal science and
considerable contribution to AALAS, especially at the Branch and
District levels.
?
The
nominee’s SOB AALAS participation may have been in the past or the
present.
Nomination Packet
?
Nominations
packet must be sent to committee by the submission deadline
?
The packet
must consist of 2 parts.
o
The
nomination document, which addresses how the nominee fits the criteria
listed above. This document must not exceed 5 pages, double-spaced.
o
Letters of
endorsement, a maximum of 5 letters limited to 2 pages each must be
from:

One letter
each from 2 Branch members
§
2-4
additional letters of support from any other applicable source.
Certification Award
Intent- SOB Council has
created an award to aid active Branch members in obtaining AALAS
certification at any level. If you are an SOB member and are seeking
AALAS certification in the next year, you are eligible to apply for the
certification scholarship award. 1 award will be given at the SOB
Awards Banquet. The award will cover the cost of the AALAS
certification exam.
Criteria
?
The award
will be based on availability of Branch funds.
?
The SOB
will pay test and applications fees. The awardee must pay for national
membership.
?
You must be
an active member to apply, attendance and participation in activities
will be considered.
?
You must
submit a complete application by December 15th of each year
to be considered.
?
The
scholarship must be used within 12 months.
Excellence in
Laboratory Animal Science Award (Plaque)
Intent- To recognize
those with experience past that of the LATG award.
Eligibility
?
This award
is to be made to anyone who has made significant contributions to
laboratory animal science: facility managers, supervisors, researchers,
administrators, veterinarians, & any others deemed qualified.
?
This award
may be won only once by an individual.
Criteria- Ranked in order
of importance:
?
Significant
interaction on a daily basis with people in the workplace.
?
Active in
AALAS; branch level involvement more important than district or national
level.
?
How the
awardee’s work result in benefits to the place of employment. Outside
activities, such as public service, educational programs, etc.

SOB AALAS recognizes
technicians for continuing their education in laboratory animal
science. All technicians are encouraged to record their yearly
educational and training activities and try for the branch award.
The Branch offers
recognition at 2 levels:

Recognition
Award – 35 CEUs
?
Distinction
Award – 50 CEUs
There are 6 different
categories for earning CEUs:
?
Category 1–
Attendance at/or participation in lectures, meetings, forums, workshops,
wet labs or training courses providing specific information about
laboratory animal medicine/laboratory animal science. Maximum credit
hours allowed: #1=25 hours & #2=15 hours.
?
Category 2–
Continuing education activities as in Category 1 except that content
must involve non-laboratory animal medicine/science topics, e.g. basic
and applied sciences, management, and communication (including college
courses and formal education). Maximum credit hours allowed: #1=5 hours
& #2=3 hours
?
Category 3–
Teaching or attendance of in-house training programs. Maximum credit
hours allowed: #1=12 hours & #2=12 hours
?
Category 4–
Preparation of published papers, chapters, books, and paper
presentations or posters to a scientific audience. Maximum credit hours
allowed: #1=5 hours & #2=3 hours
?
Category 5–
Participation in self-assessment programs, autotutorial materials,
programmed educational materials, or reading scientific journals.
Maximum credit hours allowed: #1=12 hours & #2=12 hours
?
Category 6–
Serving on a Branch or National Committee for AALAS. Holding office at
either the Branch or National level. Maximum credit hours allowed: #1=5
hours & #2=5 hours
Deadline for
submissions is December 15th of each year. Submissions
should be sent to the Technician Branch Representative at the SOB PO
Box.
